The Military Justice Improvement and Increasing Prevention Act Moves Forward!
CW: Discussion of legislation on sexual assault.
Earlier this summer, a small group of members from the Women’s Caucus met with Senator Reed to discuss the Military Justice Improvement and Increasing Prevention Act. Some of you may know this as the military sexual assault bill introduced by Senator Gillibrand, which removes the decision to prosecute certain felony crimes (such as sexual assault and murder) from commanders to specially assigned prosecutors.
The caucus group implored Senator Reed to bring this important piece of legislation to a vote and end efforts to stall the bill. Given that Senator Reed is the chair of the Armed Services Committee, it was up to him to give the act the time it deserves.
Now, Senator Gillibrand and Senator Reed have reached an agreement, and the bill has been incorporated into the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA. You can read more about the bill’s progress here as it prepares to head to the floor.
If you want to contact Senator Reed to discuss this bill or any other, you can reach him by calling his office:
