This Week in the General Assembly: June 21st-25th

As we approach the end of session, fewer bills of interest are up for hearing, but many are scheduled for consideration. Scheduled for consideration means these bills get a vote in committee, but you cannot testify on them. However, you can always call or email your senators and reps directly!


Some highlights: this week the RI Fair Housing Act is up for consideration in House Judiciary, and S190 to allow undocumented people to get driver’s licenses is up in Senate Judiciary!


 

MONDAY, JUNE 21st

House Committee on Judiciary

UP FOR CONSIDERTATION

  • H6215: Rhode Island Fair Housing Act - amends the definition of sexual orientation to modern standards and prevents landlords from discriminating against LGBTQ+ renters - support

  • H6438: creates a statewide body camera program for police departments - support

Senate Committee on Judiciary

UP FOR CONSIDERTATION

  • S190: allows undocumented immigrants to obtain legal driver’s licenses - support

UP FOR HEARING:

Requests for verbal testimony must be submitted by 4:00pm on June 20th. Written testimony may be submitted by email to SenateJudiciary@rilegislature.gov by 2:00 on the 21st.

  • S954: creates a statewide body camera program for police departments - support


WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23rd

Senate Committee on Education

UP FOR CONSIDERTATION

  • H5083: requires public schools to provide menstrual products - support

  • H5353: requires the training of school personnel for suicide awareness and prevention - support

Senate Committee on Labor

UP FOR CONSIDERTATION

  • S550: prohibits an employee from reporting on an employee’s immigration status for whistle-blowing - support
